加拿大民謠歌手 Joni Mitchell 瓊妮米契兒在成名前，有一次在飛機上讀著一本書，那是加拿大籍作家索爾貝婁（Saul Bellow）於 1959 年出版的小說《雨王韓德森》（Henderson the Rain King），內容敘述一名中年百萬富翁未能滿足自己的野心，於是他決定前往非洲，遇到許多離奇有趣的事，是本亦莊亦諧的小說。當瓊妮米契兒讀到小說中主角韓德森在飛機上俯視著雲層的情節，她不禁放下書，也望向窗外的朵朵浮雲，一時靈感泉湧，很快就寫出" Both sides now "這首歌。
" Both sides now "先是交給已小有名氣的 Judy Collins 茱蒂柯琳絲灌唱，於 1967 年發行，美聲的詮釋使這首民謠歌曲大受歡迎，在全美流行榜有第八名的佳績。翌年的葛萊美獎上茱蒂柯琳絲因此得到《最佳民謠演唱》的獎項，也使原作者瓊妮米契兒的知名度大增，後來也成為一位出色的作曲家歌手。瓊妮米契兒在 1969 年也在自己專輯中唱了這首歌，平心而論，茱蒂柯琳絲的演唱版本動聽得多。
1998年，美國紐約公共圖書館《世紀之書》編選小組以及「藍燈書屋」(The Random House)的《當代文庫》編輯小組，共同選出了「二十世紀百大英文小說」（The Hundred English Novels of The 20th Century），《雨王韓德森》名列其中。台灣曾有中文譯本，據說譯筆尚可，但想看的話，只能到舊書店碰運氣了。對岸的簡體版倒是滿容易取得，在台灣 Yahoo 拍賣就可以買到。
